There's a book that I absolutely love reading called Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse. I don't know if any of you have read it. Part of me strongly recommends reading it, but you have to have a very high tolerance for unconventional thinking. The pattern of the novel is that it starts out with a narrative of events occurring to the author and as the novel progresses there are more and more "dreamed up", surreal events and fewer actual events that the author is really experiencing.
One of the 1st things that is dreamed up is that the main person in the book, Harry Haller, is walking down the street. As he walks down the sidewalk someone comes up to him and gives him a book and walks away from him. He doesn't look at the book right away. Instead he takes the book to his rented home and finds out to his amazement that the book is actually all about him! The book gives a brief description of him and quickly delves into what his problems are. The book (actually a short story or treatise) offers some suggestions and also discusses some unconventional views on suicide and humor.
Here's my point. What if you were walking down the street and accepted a book from someone, and it turns out the short story/treatise is about you and the problems and illusions that are hurting you and your life. What would your book say? Would it be a very thin 4 page affair because you are a remarkably well-adjusted individual? Or, would your author have a lot to write about?? Hmm.............
